The best chance comes when colder, moist air settles on low ground beneath warmer, drier air, winds stay light and the cloud top remains below your viewpoint.
Helvellyn rises between Glenridding and Ullswater to the east and the Thirlmere valley to the west. Low cloud can pool on one side while exposed slopes and the summit remain in a different air mass.
A Lake District regional signal does not guarantee a clear Helvellyn summit. Look for a cloud top comfortably below 950 m, a marked moisture change above the layer and manageable summit cloud in the full mountain forecast.

Glenridding, Grasmere and Legburthwaite can show different cloud depths. Agreement on both sides is stronger evidence than fog in one valley alone.
The classic view needs the cloud top below Helvellyn with drier air above it. Deep hill cloud can hide the summit even when Ullswater-side valleys are foggy.
Calm valley air helps the pool persist, but Helvellyn's exposed ridges may be much windier. Use the full forecast before making any route decision.
